So you want to make a card game. Cool. You’ve probably already tried Google, found ten “card game software” listicles, and realized most of those tools weren’t built for games at all, they’re glorified spreadsheets or graphic design apps pretending to help. We got tired of that too. So we built Tabletop Creator, a card game maker that actually gets what you’re trying to do.
Everything a Card Game Actually Needs
No layers of Photoshop tutorials, no exporting 200 individual PNGs by hand, no spreadsheet gymnastics to keep your card numbers straight. Tabletop Creator was built specifically for games, so every tool in it already knows what a “card” is.
- Design your whole deck in one place, cards, boards, tokens, all together
- Set up variables so your card text and stats update themselves everywhere at once
- Export print-ready files with one click, or send straight to Tabletop Simulator to playtest online

A Card Game Maker Built by a Card Game Designer
Tabletop Creator started with a board game, not software. Javi Cepa, our founder, was building a physical version of his own video game, and ran straight into the wall every designer hits: turning ideas into actual cards, laid out, printable, ready to hold in your hands, was clunky, slow, and nowhere near as fun as designing the game itself. So he built himself a way out. That first version was called Card Creator, and it did exactly one thing well: cards. Layouts, text, printing, all the workflow headaches, solved.
But a game is rarely just cards. The moment you needed a board, tokens, or anything beyond a deck, Card Creator hit its limit and you were back to juggling five different tools again. And here’s the part that stuck with Javi: he’s a developer. Software is his job. If even he found the existing options frustrating and inaccessible, that wasn’t a him problem, that was the tools’ problem.
So Card Creator became Tabletop Creator. Same obsession with making things easy, same belief that you shouldn’t need a design degree to make something beautiful, but now built for a whole game instead of just a deck. Boards, tokens, cards, dual-sided components, all in one place, all with that original goal intact: get you from idea to playable game without losing your mind in the process.
The Easiest Card Game Maker You’ll Find
Tabletop Creator runs on a layer system, the same basic idea behind Canva, Illustrator or Figma, but stripped down to exactly what a card set needs and nothing else. You work with panels: each one maps to a card, and you decide what goes inside it, text, an image, a procedural element, a variable that updates itself everywhere the moment you change it once. Those building blocks technically exist in tools like Figma too. The difference is what it takes to actually use them for a full deck. In Figma, getting there means being a fairly advanced user, scripting, plugins, hours of setup before you place a single card. Here, that same power is just sitting there, ready to go, no tutorial marathon required.
Design a Card Game That’s Ready to Print
You can playtest digitally too, export straight to Tabletop Simulator and get people testing your card game online in minutes. But Tabletop Creator is built with one eye always on the table. Export is print-ready by design: cut lines, bleed, the works, so you can print your deck, cut it out and start playing without a design degree or twenty hours lost in tutorials.
Card Game Maker, TCG Maker, Whatever You Call It
Tabletop Creator isn’t built for proxies or fan mods, it’s a tool for designing your own original cards, whether that’s a TCG, a party game, or something nobody’s seen before. It’s used by hobbyists making their first prototype and by professional designers building games that actually get published. If you’d rather not start from a blank canvas, there’s also a growing library of ready-made templates, classic formats, TCG layouts, board game staples, so you can customize instead of building from zero.
How Tabletop Creator Compares to Other Card Game Makers
- nanDECK is free and genuinely powerful once you learn it, it can automate an entire deck straight from a spreadsheet, and the print output holds up. The catch is that “once you learn it” part: it’s scripting-based, so if you’re not comfortable writing code, you’re stuck before you even start designing.
- Dextrous is friendlier, it connects to Google Sheets and lets you iterate on cards fast. But it’s built almost exclusively for cards. The moment your game needs a board, tokens, or anything else, you’re already looking for a second tool.
- Component Studio leans pro, full positioning freedom, deep customization, and a smooth pipeline if you’re printing through The Game Crafter. The trade-off is a steep learning curve, closer to professional design software than something you can pick up in an afternoon. And if you’re not printing through their specific service, that big advantage doesn’t do much for you.
- Graphic design tools like Photoshop or Illustrator give you total creative freedom for the art itself. The problem shows up once you’re managing dozens or hundreds of cards: no support for bulk changes, and one rule tweak means manually updating every single card by hand.
Card Game Maker Comparison: Tabletop Creator vs the Other Good Options in the Market
We’re not going to pretend this comparison is neutral, we built Tabletop Creator. But product development for us has always been about looking at what’s out there, seeing where it falls short for different kinds of designers, and trying to close that gap. This table only covers the tools we hear about most, there are probably others we haven’t tried yet, and we’re fine admitting that. If you use one of these and think we got something wrong, tell us, we’d genuinely rather fix the table than keep it looking better than it should.
